Bio: Cadence is my miracle. I have had seizures my entire life (starting at age 2). When I hit my 40th birthday, I had enough. I was done with the daily headaches and never knowing when I would next loose control of my body was my daily struggle, and I was tired. Often along with epilepsy, comes depression. This, coupled with my exhaustion and illness, led me down a pretty bleak road. My son had researched service dogs for people with seizures, but affording one was way out of reach. It was Christmas in Arizona and through a wonderful opportunity, we were blessed to be delivering food from our home church to a family. It was a SUV loaded with food and my family. When we arrived we started unloading a month’s worth of food for the family and the family’s Christmas presents from another car. My son noticed puppies and started talking to the owner about them. He crawled under her home and pulled out 3 puppies and started playing with them. He told me, “Mom, border collies are smart and have been used as seizure dogs.” I didn’t say much. Next thing I know, he asks the lady, “How much for a puppy?” She said $20 and he pulled out the only money he had and paid her. He handed me the puppy and said “Here is your service dog.” I knew it didn’t work that way, but it was so sweet. So I took this little white and black fluff ball home and started to train her, like all our other dogs, with an education in obedience. Fast forward 6 months. Caddie started acting “weird” and finally my mom connected the dots about her behavior. She was actually alerting me when I was about to have a seizure, and not just once, she was consistent. So, I looked for a company and found “Top Dogs International”, a service dog training company and they were only 80 miles away. So, we trained her, but….before her training was done, we had to move 1400 miles away. I panicked. She was not ready to go into full time service. We moved and my previous trainer suggested I find someone local to help. So I looked online and the first trainer on my screen was “Top Dog”. It was meant to be. The help I got there was what we needed to give us that extra boost to becoming an amazing and functional team. The rest was history. We have been unstoppable since. She saved me in so many ways-physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I can’t begin to tell you what she has done and continues to do for me. She gave me reassurance, hope, confidence…I could go on. She gave me my powerful why and I love her, not only as my dog and my partner, but also as my best friend.
Dutch (Duo) Lacy
Breed: Plot Hound Mix (unless you ask his vet, then he is an Arkansas Red Dog)
Age: 7 (DOB 10/17)
Life Stage: Adult
Diet/Supplements: A-OK9 Calm and Plaque
Job/Skill: Making Nona laugh/family clown
Favorite Game: Frisbee
Favorite Snack: Peanut Butter on his Licky Mat
Motto: “Did someone say Peanut Butter?”
Bio: This “little” guy of 80 pounds is a riot! We found him and his brother at a gas station on our way to Arizona one Christmas. They were little skeletons with skin. He came up to us first, but ran away when we put down food. We were pretty confused until he came running back with his brother. Long story…there was no room in the inn for these two sweeties, so to Arizona they went with us. His brother, Hunter, was adopted by my mom and dad and lives a ranch dog’s life (and a pretty spoiled one) in Arizona. Dutch came back to Arkansas, promised to a home that fell through. By then, we were attached. What a blessing. Now he is our little nutter! Our nutter that loves peanut butter. He makes us laugh every day with his shenanigans. He is big and beautiful and we love him.
Penny (Penelope) Lacy
Breed: Staffordshire Bull
Age: 10 years
Life Stage: Adult
Diet/Supplements: A-OK9 Prime, Flexi, and Plaque
Job/Skill: A good listener-the keeper of secrets
Favorite Game: Tug, Middle
Favorite Snack: Anything on the floor
Motto: “Exercise? I thought you said extra fries”
Bio: When we found Penny, she was a tiny little puppy (around 3 1/2 pounds) sitting in a ditch in an ice storm on Easter weekend. She was tiny! We thought she was a “chiweeny”. Then she grew, and fast. It became very clear that she was a bull mix. Everything you have heard about bull mixes…not true. Penny is a very sweet girl who wiggles with excitement when anyone talks to her. She is a camera shy beauty who loves to go on car rides and eat, well, just about anything. She is the official “hoover” of our house. She is always willing to sit and listen and I guarantee she will keep any secret that you tell her. She is our little Penny Palooza.
Mia Darling (Mia Mia)
Breed: Border Collie
Age: 2 years
Life Stage: Puppy (oh my, is she ever a puppy)
Diet/Supplements: A-Ok9 Calm, Prime, Plaque and Probio
Job/Skill: Being very cute and energetic (and smart too)
Favorite Game: Left and Right Spins
Favorite Snack: Dehydrated Chicken or any Chicken
Motto: “I can be as cheeky as I want, I’m cute”
Bio: Mia came to B2P all the way from England. She has a big job to learn and big shoes, er, um, paw prints to fill. She is going straight into training to be Nona’s next service dog. This girl is 100% Border Collie with lots of moxie. She loves all her open space and can run faster than anyone else on the place. She has long legs and does not mind using them. This girl is large and in charge and is pretty sure she should be bossing everyone around. Look out for the next boss of Between 2 Pines.
In Loving Memory…
Beau
